Roy’s Peak Track

Roy’s Peak is Wānaka’s most famous walk and one of New Zealand’s most photographed hiking trails.

The 16-kilometre return track climbs steadily through alpine pasture to a summit sitting 1,578 metres above sea level. Along the way, panoramic views unfold across Lake Wānaka, Lake Hāwea and the surrounding Southern Alps.

Allow five to six hours for the return walk and bring plenty of water, particularly during summer.

Visitor note: The track closes annually from 1 October to 10 November for lambing season.
