Christchurch FAQs

Christchurch is a city that has reinvented itself in impressive style following the 2011 earthquakes, and visiting today you get a real sense of a place that has built something genuinely fresh and interesting. The city has a beautiful botanic garden, a revitalised arts and dining precinct in the Riverside Market area, and the iconic Christchurch Tram which is a lovely way to get your bearings on arrival. It’s also the main gateway to the South Island, sitting at the start of some of New Zealand’s most spectacular driving routes.

Two nights is enough to explore the city highlights at a comfortable pace. Most of our Christchurch holiday packages use it as the starting point for a broader South Island self-drive, heading out towards the West Coast glaciers, Mount Cook, Queenstown or Kaikōura depending on the itinerary. If you’d like to spend more time in the city itself, we’re happy to build that in.

The Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park are beautiful at any time of year and worth a morning of your time. The Christchurch Tram is a great introduction to the city, looping past the main landmarks with commentary along the way. The International Antarctic Centre is a popular stop, particularly for families. The TranzAlpine rail journey from Christchurch over the Southern Alps to Greymouth is one of New Zealand’s great train experiences and well worth adding to any Christchurch holiday.

Christchurch is generally one of the more accessible South Island cities to visit, with a wide range of accommodation options to suit different budgets. Our Christchurch holiday packages are priced competitively and can be tailored to match what you’re looking for, whether that’s a short city break or the start of a longer South Island adventure.

It’s one of the best. Christchurch sits at the top of the South Island with easy access to the Mackenzie Basin and Mount Cook to the southwest, the Kaikōura coast to the north, the West Coast glaciers via the TranzAlpine, and Queenstown further south. Most of our South Island self-drive packages begin in Christchurch for exactly this reason.

It’s a great city for families. The International Antarctic Centre is a real favourite, and the Botanic Gardens offer plenty of open space for kids to enjoy. The city is easy to navigate, and having so many South Island road trip options on the doorstep means families can use Christchurch as a launching pad for an adventure that suits everyone.
