Milford Sound is around four hours away and one of New Zealand’s most iconic experiences, well worth building into any Queenstown holiday. For wine lovers, a day trip through the Central Otago vineyards around Gibbston Valley is a real treat. And in winter, Coronet Peak and The Remarkables offer some of the best skiing in the Southern Hemisphere.

There are direct flights from several Australian cities into Queenstown Airport, which makes it very straightforward to get there. It’s also a common starting or finishing point for South Island self-drives, with Christchurch being the other major South Island gateway.
