New Zealand is one of the most walkable countries in the world.
Every year, thousands of travellers lace up their boots to explore the hidden corners of this endlessly green paradise. And the best bit? No snakes, creepies or crawlies to ruin the mood.
The North Island is a quiet achiever. It’s packed with beaches, volcanoes, coastlines and national parks that reward anyone willing to get out and explore.
What Are the Best Day Walks on New Zealand’s North Island?
Some of the best day walks on New Zealand’s North Island include the Rangitoto Summit Track near Auckland, the dramatic Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa, the Coromandel Coastal Walkway and the challenging Cape Brett Walkway in the Bay of Islands. Together, they showcase the volcanic landscapes, coastal scenery and wilderness experiences that make the North Island such a rewarding place to explore on foot.
Here are four tried-and-tested walks to add to your itinerary.

1. Rangitoto Summit
Duration: 2 hours
Difficulty: Easy, with a few moderate sections
Start: Rangitoto Wharf
Volcano chasers, this one’s for you.
Rising from the Hauraki Gulf, Rangitoto’s perfectly conical silhouette draws the eye from the moment you arrive. The track begins at the wharf and climbs through ancient lava fields, rocky outcrops and regenerating forest before reaching the summit 259 metres above sea level.
The reward is a panoramic view across Auckland, the gulf and the surrounding islands.
Regular ferries depart from central Auckland, making Rangitoto one of the easiest island adventures to add to your holiday.

2. Putangirua Pinnacles
Duration: 3 hours
Difficulty: Easy, with a few uneven sections
Start: Aorangi Forest Park
Rocky, raw and wonderfully photogenic, the Putangirua Pinnacles feel like a landscape from another world.
These dramatic earth pillars were formed over thousands of years as rain eroded the softer surrounding terrain. The result is a maze of towering rock formations that became famous as the Path of the Dead in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
Views across Palliser Bay and Lake Onoke add to the appeal.
Bring plenty of water. This walk can be surprisingly warm in summer.

3. Coromandel Coastal Walkway
Duration: 7 hours
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Start: Northern Coromandel Peninsula
Set aside a full day for this one.
The Coromandel Coastal Walkway delivers spectacular ocean views, native forest, abundant birdlife and some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in the country. Along the way you’ll spot landmarks including the Coromandel Pinnacles, Port Charles and Cuvier Island.
The track runs between Stony Bay and Fletcher Bay.
Don’t want the experience to end? Camp at either end and tackle the return journey the following day.

4. Cape Brett Walkway, Bay of Islands
Duration: 8 hours one way
Difficulty: Challenging
Start: Rawhiti, Bay of Islands
This walk is strictly for confident hikers.
The Cape Brett Walkway traverses some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in Northland. The trail follows ridgelines high above the Pacific Ocean, delivering breathtaking views for much of the journey.
At the end awaits the historic Cape Brett Lighthouse and a Department of Conservation hut.
Many walkers stay overnight before returning the following day. Others arrange a water taxi pickup for the trip back.
Either way, the sense of achievement is enormous.
