Where Are the Best Places to See Dolphins in New Zealand?

Few wildlife encounters can compare to the playful company of New Zealand’s native dolphins.

Cheeky, cheerful and not particularly shy, spotting dolphins in the wild is one of those experiences that stays with you long after you’ve left. New Zealand is home to nine dolphin species, including some of the rarest in the world.

The best places to see dolphins in New Zealand are the Bay of Islands, Akaroa and Kaikōura. Each destination offers a different experience, from bottlenose dolphins in Northland to rare Hector’s dolphins in Akaroa and the famous dusky dolphin superpods of Kaikōura.

Bay of Islands

The Bay of Islands is a veritable playground for marine life, and dolphins are among its most reliable residents.

Bottlenose dolphins are frequently spotted bow-riding alongside cruise boats, leaping through the wake and circling vessels with obvious curiosity. A dolphin cruise from Paihia is one of the best ways to experience the region’s stunning subtropical waters.

Pods often put on a show that requires nothing more than a good vantage point and a camera.

Akaroa

Akaroa Harbour is home to one of the most special dolphin encounters in the world.

This is one of the few places where you can see Hector’s dolphins, the world’s smallest dolphin species and one found only in New Zealand. These endangered dolphins are naturally curious and regularly approach boats and swimmers in the sheltered waters of the harbour.

Nature cruises and swimming experiences operate here under strict guidelines designed to protect the species.

Even from a boat, the experience is unforgettable. Watching Hector’s dolphins glide through the calm waters against the backdrop of the harbour’s volcanic crater hills is genuinely moving.

Kaikōura

Kaikōura is New Zealand’s ocean wildlife capital.

Dusky dolphins are among its most abundant residents. These highly social animals travel in large pods, sometimes numbering in the hundreds. They are famous for their acrobatic displays, regularly leaping, spinning and surfing through the waves.

Watching a superpod from a boat on a calm Kaikōura morning is an experience that genuinely stops you in your tracks.

For those wanting an even closer encounter, guided dolphin-swimming experiences are also available.
