What are the Waitomo Glowworm Caves?
The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a series of limestone caves carved by underground streams over millions of years, located in the King Country region of New Zealand’s Waikato. The caves sit beneath rolling farmland near the small village of Waitomo, roughly between Auckland and Rotorua on the North Island.
The caves are named from the Māori words “wai” (water) and “tomo” (hole) — a direct reference to the underground streams and sinkholes that define the landscape. The limestone itself has origins going back approximately 30 million years, when the region was still beneath the sea. The formations you see today — stalactites descending from the ceiling, stalagmites rising from the floor — grow by only about 1 centimetre every 100 years.
Is Waitomo Glowworm Caves Worth Visiting?
For most visitors to New Zealand’s North Island, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves are absolutely worth visiting. The combination of ancient limestone formations, underground rivers and thousands of glowworms creates an experience unlike anything else in New Zealand.
For Australian travellers, Waitomo is particularly popular because it can be easily visited as a day trip from Auckland or incorporated into a self-drive itinerary between Auckland and Rotorua. The glowworm boat ride is often considered one of the highlights of a North Island holiday and appeals equally to families, couples and solo travellers.
What Makes the Waitomo Glowworms Unique?
The glowworms found at Waitomo are unique to New Zealand and are responsible for one of the country’s most remarkable natural spectacles. Thousands of glowworms attach themselves to the cave ceiling, producing a blue-green light that creates the appearance of a star-filled night sky underground.
The effect is most impressive inside the Glowworm Grotto, where visitors drift silently through the darkness by boat beneath thousands of glowing lights reflected in the still water below.

What Happens on the Waitomo Glowworm Caves Tour?
The classic guided tour of the Waitomo Glowworm Caves takes approximately 45 minutes and includes both a walking and boating component. The experience is suitable for most visitors and involves minimal walking.
The tour begins with a guided walk through a series of limestone chambers, where you’ll learn about the caves’ geology, history and cultural significance. Along the way, you’ll pass impressive stalactites and stalagmites, including the famous Cathedral chamber, renowned for its remarkable acoustics.
The highlight of the tour is the Glowworm Grotto. Here, visitors board a small boat and glide silently through the darkness beneath thousands of glowworms. With no photography and minimal noise, the experience feels peaceful, immersive and unlike anything else in New Zealand.
Is Photography Allowed at Waitomo Glowworm Caves?
No. Photography and videography are not permitted inside the Waitomo Glowworm Caves or the Glowworm Grotto. This restriction helps protect the glowworms, which are sensitive to light, while also preserving the atmosphere of the experience for all visitors.
There are, however, opportunities to take photographs around the visitor centre and cave entrance before and after your tour.
