Best Free Self-Drive Attractions on the South Island

Holidays cost money — that’s an inescapable fact of travel.

But unlike many destinations around the world, New Zealand comes with a genuine advantage: many of its best highlights are completely free. Sure, there are paid tours worth every cent, but some of the South Island’s most memorable experiences require little more than time, a sense of adventure and a tank of petrol.

Pack a picnic, hit the road and discover why the South Island is what self-drive dreams are made of.

What Are the Best Free Self-Drive Attractions?

Some of the best free self-drive attractions on New Zealand’s South Island include the Queenstown Botanical Gardens and lakefront walk, the spectacular Haast Pass Road with its waterfalls and Blue Pools, and the unforgettable drive through Fiordland National Park to Milford Sound. These attractions combine incredible scenery, easy access and unforgettable experiences without costing a cent.

1. Queenstown Botanical Gardens and Lake Walk

Leave the bungy jumping to the crowds and enjoy a leisurely stroll through the Queenstown Botanical Gardens.

Perched on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, this collection of native and introduced plants delights every sense. Wander beneath mature trees, enjoy a picnic lunch and soak up the lake views before setting off along the waterfront path.

Photo opportunities appear around almost every corner.

Inside tip: Don’t overlook the shoulder seasons. Autumn combines clear skies, cooler temperatures and brilliant shades of gold, red and orange. Many locals consider it the best time of year to visit.

2. Haast Pass Road

Thunder Creek Falls and the Blue Pools in one seamless journey — that’s Haast Pass Road.

The Blue Pools are exactly what they sound like. Their crystal-clear glacial water glows an extraordinary shade of blue beneath the forest canopy. Nearby waterfalls, walking tracks and scenic lookouts make it easy to fill an entire day.

The road itself is part of the attraction. Ancient rainforest crowds the highway, while countless scenic stops invite travellers to slow down and explore.

Inside tip: If there isn’t a designated parking area, keep driving. Local authorities strongly discourage roadside parking for safety reasons.

3. The Road to Milford Sound (Including Te Anau)

There aren’t enough words in any language to describe the splendour of Milford Sound.

But don’t rush through Fiordland National Park to get there.

Spend time in Te Anau first. This relaxed lakeside town is the perfect place to recharge before heading deeper into the wilderness. From there, the journey becomes part of the experience. The road winds through the Eglinton Valley, past mirror lakes and alpine scenery, before reaching the famous Homer Tunnel and eventually Milford Sound itself.

It’s one of the world’s great scenic drives.

Inside tip: Pack a waterproof jacket regardless of the season. Rain transforms Milford Sound into a landscape of hundreds of temporary waterfalls and can be just as spectacular as a sunny day.
